Um, sorry that this reply is sooo late. I haven't been here for a while.
When I removed mine, I stuck my small soft digits (fingers) down the sides of the clips and used my finger-tips to pull the clips out and up a little, carefully working my around the surround, swearing occassionally as they clipped backed in and needed more coaxing. I may have even used small wedges of timber under the clips to stop them re-engaging. I recall removing the trim on the passenger side as well - but I wished that I hadn't.

Better late than never.
My gear selector chrome trim is peeling and would look better changed for a new one.
Thanks for the advice.

Here are some images from Ebay(click to enlarge) which should help the removal process:

According to the seller TL/TW is different from TJ
Difference confirmed here:Please Note : This Gear Shift Surround will NOT fit TJ / KJ and earlier models as they are slightly different.

Image host = ImageVenue:

which I am finding easy/better to use compared to some other hosting services.
So far, there is no "signup" needed, no "watermark" like Photobucket, and the images tend to be permanent.

Combined with the information and images in this thread:

this job is now relatively easy.

This thread:

is helpful for removing the shifter itself.
So, I believe that all bases are covered.
